Internet 2 promoting SIP addresses

This is somewhat old-news now, but it’s worth noting. The Internet 2 is promoting an inititive called SIP.edu to make all telephones (and users) at a given institution reachable via SIP.

Stated goals are:

  • Increase the number of SIP-reachable users within Internet2;
  • Promote the convergence of voice and email identities;
  • Build a community of Internet2 schools that is experimenting with offering enterprise SIP services.

The site shows a graph indicating the total number of SIP reachable users, which at this writing appears to be a little over 140,000.
