I am new to VOIP and I am about to set up a customer (global travellers) with a softphones on their laptops (SJphone) for breakout to pstn and Skype for talking to each other - in the belief that Skype is better at handling the NATS and firwall issues. I know that one day they will have to replace Skype when Skype want to put the squeeze on but until then this seems the best solution. Any ideas for improvement?

craig, Firefly looks interesting. I'll have to check it out. One issue I have with IAX is that there seem to be no docs for it, just source code in Asterisk, and no formal standards bodies adopting it. Verbiage says Firefly supports SIP protocol, but I don't know exactly what that means. I.e. if I have my own SIP proxy, do I still need a 'Firefly number'? I'll have to see.

I will check out Firefly, but it seems to be another central-service rather than a peer-to-peer to system.

Open standards you say?

Firefly (by Virbiage.com), is not getting alot of talk yet (probably because their landline calling is due in May),,,but they are definaltely worth watching.

IAX based (open standard), Complies with H.323, MGCP, SIP protocol

I am surprised there is not more talk of them yet.

Pete, I do still work for EarthLink, part-time, as a researcher. They have an R&D office in Pleasanton, CA. where I work.

Jim, your workaround is practical for IM (except Trillian only runs on Windows, unless I'm wrong), but it doesn't address the VoIP question.

Nice write up. Just wanted to mention WRT Instant Messaging that one can use Trillian. Our staff is entirely distributed and, as with anything, everyone has their favorite chat client. So we all use Trillian and, eventually, all end up with chat memberships on all vendors. This means that we now have a quintuple redundant chat network. If MSN or Yahoo go down for a time, we are protected. So, no widely used open source chat - yes. (But it's coming) But there is a workaround. -- Jim.

greetings. found your website off a very old earthlink employee homepage listing. just thought i'd say hi. you probably have no idea who i am...:) but i used to work at earthlink...early 1996 til 2000. i don't remember too many names of the people i worked with('cept for the ones i now consider friends), but i do remember your name(because of bdt), as well as other execs and sr. management... sky of course, gary betty, dave tommela, arman afsar, and jon irwin. :)

anyways i take it you're not with earthlink anymore? or do they have an office in SF now?
